The Alpine Club of Chania brings children close to nature
On the occasion of the summer vacation at schools, the Alpine Club of Chania organized activities for children in mountainous areas around Chania and in other areas in Greece.
Twenty five children from the elementary school climbed in 2,5 hours from Zourva to Tromarissa following a marked path.
It took a lot of effort for them to climb the steep path amidst the cypress tress, but they made it after a short break under the huge plane trees (platania). They learned the history of the area and returned to Zourva from the same route.
Alpine Centers for Children
Based at the Tavri refuge high up the Askifou Plateau towards Chora Sfakion, 75 children divided into two groups experienced the beauty of nature.
The activities included trekking, climbing, rappel, overnight staying in tents and outdoor games related to the mountains. Children learned about the flora and fauna of the White Mountains and were occupied daily by volunteer instructors.
The first group spent 9 days at the mountain refuge, while the second group spent four days there.
Pan-Hellenic Meeting of Alpinists
Thirteen children joined the group of Chania residents that traveled to Fokida in Central Greece and climbed the Vardoussia Mountains, participating at the 69th Pan-Hellenic Meeting of Alpinists.
For the third year in a row small children of the Alpine Club climbed a high mountain outside Crete. After the meeting, an excursion was organized to the Gorge “It always rains” (Panta Vrehei) in Evritania.
The children were fascinated with the differences in the landscape and the abundant waters in River Krikelopotamos. Taking a bath in natural lakes and constant hydromassage in wild but risk-free waters, everyone, smaller or bigger, were ecstatic with the view to this infamous Gorge.
