The Palace of Knossos and the works of Domenikos Theotokopoulos have been included in the European Cultural Heritage List.
Greek monuments include the Acropolis at the top of the list, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the church of St George in Venice and the works of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco).
The Palace of Knossos, the political, economic and cultural centre of the thriving Minoan empire, is an architectural masterpiece and an emblematic European monument, representing the first advanced social and political society in Europe.
The aim of the European Heritage Label programme is to draw up a European List of monuments for the cultural integration of the continent, based on a body of monuments symbolising ideas and values held in common by all European citizens.
