New projects in Heraklion
There was progress on the realization of three major Heraklion road projects in the last week of October.
- The section of the Heraklion – Messara road from Apomarmas to Kastelli was put out to tender with a budget of 49 million euros. The project comprises the construction of a 7.9-kilometre-long road and includes two tunnels with a total length of 630 m., a large 140-metre-long bridge, four small bridges, six crossings and a junction, as well as adjacent and cross roads. The project deadline is 30 months from now. The second section of the road, from Agia Varvara to Apomarmas, will be put out to tender in 2007, finally completing the long-awaited road to Messara. This section will be 7.8 km long and include three bridges with a total length of about 705 m., a 505-metre-long tunnel, grade crossings and normal junctions, and adjacent and cross roads. The whole Agia Varvara- Apomarmas – Kastelli road is 15.7 km long, with a total budget of 108.9 million euros.
- The contract for the construction of the Paleokastro junction at Gazi has been signed. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2007
- The Papanastasiou Avenue overpass (one of the national road exits to Heraklion) has been put out to tender. The project comprises the construction of a flyover which will free the national road from traffic lights and traffic jams. The Papanastasiou Avenue flyover will be two-direction, about 120 metres long and 15 metres wide. The project budget is about 9 million euros with a deadline of two and a half years.
